Putco Hornet Beacon FAQ

What is the difference between the Hornet Beacon and the Dual-Beacon Kit?

The Hornet Beacon is a universal lighthead that requires manual installation. It mounts using a bolt pattern and requires drilling, along with standard 12V wiring.

The Dual-Beacon Kit is a complete, vehicle-specific solution designed for Ford F-150 and Super Duty trucks. It includes two pre-installed beacons mounted to a third brake light bracket with a plug-and-play wiring harness. This allows for a no-drill installation using factory mounting points and OEM-grade adhesive.

How are the Hornet Beacons mounted?

The universal Hornet Beacon uses a bolt-on mounting system. It installs using three bolts and includes a foam gasket to create a secure and sealed mounting surface.

Installation overview:

  • – Clean and prep the mounting surface
  • – Test fit the beacon
  • – Secure using included bolts and gasket

What is included with the universal Hornet Beacon?

Each universal beacon includes:

  • – Beacon lighthead
  • – Mounting bolts and nuts
  • – Foam gasket

How are the Hornet Beacons wired?

The Hornet Beacon uses a standard 12V wiring setup:

  • – Black wire: Ground
  • – Red wire: 12V+ for amber LEDs
  • – Blue wire: 12V+ for white LEDs if equipped
  • – Yellow wire: Pattern control tap to 12V+
  • – White wire: Troubleshooting wire not used

How do you change strobe patterns?

While the beacon is powered on, tap the yellow wire to 12V+ to cycle through available patterns.

To sync multiple beacons:

  • – Connect all yellow wires together
  • – Tap and hold to align patterns
  • – Tap again to select the desired pattern

Does the Hornet Beacon remember the last pattern used?

Yes. The beacon retains the last selected pattern after power is turned off and resumes that pattern when powered back on.

Can multiple Hornet Beacons be synchronized together?

Yes. Multiple beacons can be synced by wiring their yellow pattern wires together. This allows all lights to flash in the same sequence.

How is the Dual-Beacon Kit powered?

The Dual-Beacon Kit uses a plug-and-play wiring harness that taps into the vehicle’s third brake light system for power.

Where is the control switch installed in the Dual-Beacon Kit?

The kit includes a momentary switch integrated into the wiring harness. The final mounting location is user-determined, with most installations placing the switch inside the cab, typically on or under the dash.

Can the Dual-Beacon Kit be removed or transferred to another truck?

Yes, but with limitations. The bracket is vehicle-specific for Ford F150 and Super Duty trucks. While the factory mounting points remain usable, the adhesive tape would need to be replaced for reinstallation. The system is transferable only between compatible vehicles.

Does the Dual-Beacon Kit interfere with factory vehicle systems?

No. The system is designed for OEM fitment and does not interfere with:

  • Backup cameras
  • Cargo lights
  • Third brake light CHMSL operation
